Right to Education: The State shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of age of 6 years to 14 years, in such manner as the State may, by law, determine. [Article 21A of the Constitution of India]. Under the Directive Principles of State Policy, the State is to secure a Social Order for the promotion of WELFARE of the people [Article 38]. There shall be EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY for all citizens in matters relating to employment or appointment to any office under the State [Article 16].
With the sanguine intention to ensure that all the Disabled Citizens [of whom Mentally Retarded/ Disabled are very much part and parcel], also get the benefits of the above guarantees, the Govt. of India has formulated schemes to assist voluntary action in this area, as, it cannot by itself fully implement them. As a follow up to Early Intervention, Special School Stage is to keep up the tempo of equipping the Special Children with the requisite practical knowledge, basic to acquiring living - skills - competence.
In tune with the above guarantees and State Policy, Lekhadeep has started a Special School [on 20.09.2003], to enable the Intellectually Challenged Children in Ranga Reddy District Rural Areas and Slums and Low Income Group Habitats of Hyderabad, to be educated in mastering concepts of colour, size, shape, depth, distance, quantity and money.
They will equip them to move smoothly from the School to Pre-vocational and then on to Vocational Training, as a prelude to working in a Sheltered Workshop and where feasible move on to Self Employment or Open Employment - Empowerment, to the extent their deficiencies permit. Trained and qualified Teachers with BEd, [Special Education - MR], DSE [MR], Speech Therapy etc. are manning the School which successfully completed three years of existence as on 20th September 2006.
